Debra Silverstein has been Alderwoman of the 50th Ward since 2011. As the only Jewish alderwoman on the Chicago City Council and the representative of the largest Jewish community in the City of Chicago, she has made combating antisemitism and hate a strong legislative priority.

Recent achievements include the passage of her CHI vs Hate legislation—the first significant upgrade to Chicago’s hate crimes legislation in three decades—as well as the passage of a resolution condemning Hamas, making Chicago the first large city in America to condemn the terrorist attack that murdered 1,200 innocent Israelis.

In recognition of her work to combat antisemitism, Alderwoman Silverstein was recently selected to light the Diaspora Torch at the State of Israel’s Yom HaAtzmaut celebration in May of 2024.

The 50th Ward is the most diverse and wonderful community in the City of Chicago. Drawing from a wide breadth of knowledge and commitment to the residents of this neighborhood, Debra works every day to make it a better place to live, work, and raise a family.

This program is brought to you by the Anshe Emet Sisterhood and Hadassah.
