Dr. Kaplan was a trauma surgeon in the Korean War and a general surgeon at Thorek Hospital and Medical Center for 26 years. Dr. Kaplan graduated from medical school at the University of Illinois in 1949 and did his residency at Cook County Hospital. After enlisting in the Army, he spent three years treating soldiers hurt in the Korean War. Afterward, Dr. Kaplan practiced at several hospitals, including Bethany, before accepting a position at Thorek in 1975. Frank Solare, President and Chief Executive of Thorek, called Dr. Kaplan a tireless physician who worked seven days a week. “He had a mass of patients probably greater than any physician that I’ve met
in my life,” Solare said.
Dr. Kaplan was a prominent member of Anshe Emet Synagogue and loved the musical legacy that began with Cantor Moses J. Silverman followed by Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi. The Synagogue is very grateful for Dr. Kaplan’s devotion and the special legacy which endows Senior Cantor Rachel Brook’s position.
